Australian Open - History
The Australian Open championship was first held on grass courts in
Melbourne in 1905. Since its inaugural event, this tournament has been held in
five different Australian cities, most frequently in Melbourne.
It adopted its current name, Australian Open, in 1969 with the novelty that this
tournament could be played by both professionals and amateurs.
The tournament was not held from 1916 to 1918 due to World War I, and again from 1941 to 1945 due to World War II. Since 1972, the tournament has been held solely in Melbourne, and from 1988 exclusively at the new stadium complex known as Melbourne Park, with a new surface. No longer played on grass, it moved to a hard court.
New facilities at Melbourne Park have increased public interest in this tournament, raising its viewership and attendance to enviable levels.
In the early 20th century, due to the distance of Australia from Europe, only a few foreign players participated in this tournament, but their number grew with the tournament's increasing popularity.
In its early years, the month of the Australian Open's occurrence often changed. From 1982 to 1985, the tournament was held in mid-December, but it was moved to January in 1987, and since then, it has always taken place in January. The 1986 tournament was not held due to the change in the month of the event, and in 2021, it was postponed to February due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
In 2008, Melbourne Park installed retractable roofs over the main tennis courts, making the Australian Open the first tournament whose matches could be played uninterrupted, without delays due to weather conditions.
